Federated Intelligent Product EnviRonmet

Brief Overview
The Federated Intelligent Product EnviRonment (FIPER) will drastically reduce design cycle time and time-to-market, with the potential to reduce the cost of product creation by $2.2B annually for the U.S. manufacturing sector.  This four-year, $21.5M program, sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program (ATP), will reduce cycle time by intelligently automating elements of the design process and providing true concurrency between design and manufacturing. FIPER will enable distributed design of robust and optimized products within an advanced integrated web-based environment.

Picture an Engineering and Design Operating System-like environment that supports Collaboration among Geographically Distributed business teams.  The framework will host your tools, including CAE, CAD, PDM, database, costing, producibility and methods thus reducing the cost and time of product creation while increasing reliability and quality.  Once any of these tools are wrapped into the framework, models can be integrated and assembled into a workflow process and AUTOMATICALLY executed, applying a number of design drivers (DOE, Optimization, Monte Carlo, Robust Design, Reliability Analysis and DFSS) to these processes.

The proposal objective of FIPER is presented in the executive summary.

The FIPER (1999-2003) is the precursor of SORCER. Mike Sobolewski was a chief architect and lead developer of FIPER at GE GRC (Global Research Center) and continues it at Texas Tech University. The SORCER environment expends many domains that were introduced by FIPER and introduces new ones for metacomputing and service-oriented programming.
